These are great, sturdy gates. I bought three for the rooms in which my bunnies live. The only problem, which I knew ahead of time, is the bars are too far apart. So, I had to put plastic over the panels to keep my buns from trying to get through. I tried pool noodles but the buns ripped them off right away. Plastic doesn't look great, but it works. Also, if you're using this for a bunny or another animal, make sure the bottom latch is secure. I have a very smart bun who, upon seeing the latch wasn't tight enough, just pushed the gate open and walked through the door.If Regalo really wants to make a killing, make the gates with the bars much closer together. Bunny parents are always looking for good gates and the bars are always too far apart.5 years ago I bought this gate for the apartment I lived in for my 2 year old bull mastiff that weighed 76 pounds, and it held up great! I worried that it wouldn’t be sturdy enough just by reading other gates product reviews ending in nightmares that said their dogs easily broke through them and destroyed homes or bit humans. I searched and compared reviews of about 30 other gates with same or similar strength/durability and specs. I decided to go with this one because it had more positive reviews for the things I wanted and cared for most in a gate than the really bad negative reviews it had on things I wanted but that I could deal with assuming they were valid and weren’t written by cause of user error...like doesn’t work, hard to assemble, the latch is faulty by design, bad instructions etc. I took it with me to the house I bought a year later and was happy that it fit in a much wider door frame without needing the the extension piece it came with that I never used and was somewhere in the unpacked moving boxes still in the garage. I still had my bull mastiff at the time and ended up getting him a friend and she was a 2 month old APBT. It’s been about 5 years now having this gate that has held up very well against a now 7 year old 98 pound bull mastiff and a 4 year old 48 pound short and stocky APBT. I had always wished for another extra gate to have since my house was a lot bigger and to be able to separate the dogs conveniently indoors when I wanted to. But I just never got around to getting it. Today, I searched my history for it and bought another one because my parents have a 9 month old Chiweenie that visits me frequently and that I train. She is a very good jumper with high energy and she jumps and climbs over their gates and can get through some of them because she fits through the bars. She can’t climb or jump over this one and she can’t get through it.So here I am again buying a 2nd one and I’m sooo glad they still have it in stock and I LOVE the PRICE! Installation was easy as long as you thoroughly read all the directions and follow them. Instructions were included and easy to follow. All parts were included including the extension, and the latch is not faulty or hard to operate either, even one handed. Small kids won’t be able to open it either because there is a tug back and raise feature to the latch lock system. The surface has held up well against my dogs and no paint scratches or chips have appeared from their use on it. I’ve had to buy new tension pressure screws because the rubber molds around the end that holds against the door frame had worn off eventually falling off over the years, which does make it less secure and can scuff your paint too. But I only needed them just a year ago, but never used them because I packed them up accidentally and put the box in the garage with several other boxes that live in the garage, and couldn’t find them. So I bought these rubber protective cups to maintain the pressure tightness and to save my paint. See my pics. Neither solutions costed much either. If you ever need to buy replacements just make sure they are the same and correct length because they do come in various sizes. The picture in my review is of this gate that I bought 5 years ago so you can see how it’s held up so far and those rubber cups that I use between the tension screw and the inside of my door frame.I hope my review has been helpful to you in order to help you decide which is the right gate for you, your home and needs of use.I have 2 kids, a 4yo and a 3yo. This works amazing for a toddler that climbs over every gate there is. They can't get a grip on it. 4yo on the other hand has figured out how to open it normally and has figured out the bottom latch as well. Which defeats the purpose of this purchase. But you win some and you lose some. Still a good gate if you don't have crafty kids lolI had purchased this particular gate 3 times, and the first 2 were taller than this last one. I can't blame anyone but myself on this, as it does state several times the height is 36", which is accurate. The first 2 were 41", and when I went to "buy again" this time - I was disappointed to see it was shorter than the other 2. The first one lasted several years before it broke (the door locking mechanism only) - then I replaced it with the identical height one less than a year ago. We were getting ready to block off another area, that required a large extension (which I ordered through Regalo directly) - so I ordered from the same items page again, thinking it would be the same 41" tall gate, and now I am disappointed since I now need to move gates around to make it work. We had to screw in the cups to the wall, so kiddo couldn't just push it over via the pressure alone - which makes a world of a difference on that. But now, we will need to relocate those if we feel the need to keep using them, to match this shorter gate than the other 2. It appears that the 41" gate has been discontinued, as their website doesn't show the 41" gate either - and they are only doing this 36" tall instead. BUT they don't offer the extensions for the 36" - only the 30" and 41". Not Amazon's fault, that is the company itself, when I was on their website. SO, the point of this review: don't expect to be able to find other/extra extensions for this particular height gate - at least as of today. Even through Regalo directly. I haven't opened the box yet to look at the booklet that comes with it for part numbers, but I ordered an extension from them that would fit Model: 1166's - which this is one of those models - and it won't work.Yea, it seems good so far. I’ve had it less than a month, so will update as to how it goes. I have a 5-ish month old Lab/border collie/escape artist. This gate is perfect height and I really don’t think she’ll be able to jump when she gets older. She’s also tried to slam her body against it for about 20 minutes and it held up.As far as the instal…I’m 31,5’3, 135lbs and I put this together myself. I will say it does takes effort. But it truly isn’t that bad. I read some reviews about the door not reaching to close…. Just keep going with the directions. They also fixed the issue with the wobbly bit at the bottom of the gate. (Pictured).Over all the appearance, durability, and installation was exactly what I was looking for my pup.Purchased for my three puppies. Wanted them to have a larger space to stay in when I leave the house. Was very easy to assemble and install...about 20 minutes total. Great height to prevent jump overs. Opens and closes with ease...not self closing. Would recommend getting the wall protector cups as well.Good quality, not difficult to install, with a finnicky latching system. BUT.. Be advised.. This gate will NOT fit most Canadian stairways. Average width in Canada, is between 43-45 inches. This gate is 39.5 inches, and the extension pins will make the gate weak (flimsy), if fully extended. Hence, measure the area you wish to install exactly, before purchasing. Or be prepared to install 2x4s (or similar) on your walls, at your cost and time. There are other wider gates available, and some at better prices, here on Amazon. Remember... measure up before buying. We got his for our medium sized dog and it works perfectly as it's the right height she can't jump over it without a lot of effort, if she stands up then her head if just over but that's fine for us.The lock can either be put down normally or locked down meaning you have to pull back a piece of plastic to open it. ( good if you are using it for kids as they can't simply just lift it up)This is a superb gate at a superb price, it's the only one that's kept our naughty cockapoo puppy behind bars!! But there again it's nearly as big as me! Came with an extender piece which with other more expensive gates is an additional purchase! Although it fitted our kitchen doorway perfectly, highly recommendWe have a German Shepherd puppy who was pushing over and trying to get through the baby gate we had up. This gate is tall, his paws slide through when he tries to climb. Easy in and out, happy with the purchaseNarrow gate and does not take much for a toddler to unfix. It's probably best for a small dog or crawling baby that has no intention or too lazy to escape but giving you that little bit of security.
